Meta data is the data defining warehouse
objects. It stores:

Description of the structure of the data
warehouse
o
schema, view, dimensions, hierarchies,
derived data defn, data mart locations and contents
·
Operational meta-data
o
data lineage (history of migrated data
and transformation path), currency of data (active, archived, or purged),
monitoring information (warehouse usage statistics, error reports, audit
trails)
·
The algorithms used for summarization
·
The mapping from operational environment
to the data warehouse
·
Data related to system performance
o
warehouse schema, view and derived data
definitions
·
Business data
o
business terms and definitions,
ownership of data, charging policies
·
Metadata is defined as “information that describes data”.
·
Report
metadata describes information about the report, and also contains a
high level description of the report contents. Examples of report
metadata are the report
ID, Executive Summary, Data Custodian, and the report author.
·
Central reports,
or reports published on the central server, are required to
display certain metadata components. These components provide report context
and support information.
